Asmara, 11 July 2012 – The Administration of the Central region indicated that active participation is being witnessed as regards community-based afforestation activities. It made the statement at an assessment meeting conducted at the City Administration Hall in the presence of local Administrators and community representatives.
The meeting noted that terraces have been built along with holes dug for the planting of tree seedlings within enclosures of every village, in addition to the plan mapped out to undertake afforestation activities in the church and school compounds. In reports they presented, the Area administrators indicated that the popular undertaking is being conducted twice to four times a week.
Accordingly, 70% and 50% of the task has been accomplished in the sub-zones of Gala-Nefhi and Berik respectively, while fulfillment of the chore stands at 34% in Serejeka sub-zone. The remaining Administrations are due to announce fulfillment of the task shortly.
Pointing out that afforestation is exceptionally vital in the present era of drastic climatic change, Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, Administrator of the Central region, called on the inhabitants to sustain such popular initiatives as they are directly related to national development programs.
