Diversion canal in Hashenkit renovated at 1.2 million Nakfa

Haikota, 12 July 2012 – The Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Haikota sub-zone indicated that the diversion canal in Hashenkit has been renovated at an expenditure of 1.2 Nakfa. Mr. Natnael Yonatan, head of irrigation development in the branch office, said that the task was accomplished through the mobilization of machinery and wide popular participation, and that 500 meters-long canal has been built to void similar problem in the future.

Mr. Yonas Yosef, head of the branch office, explained that farmers would now enjoy abundant water for irrigation following the renovation of the diversion canal.

Among the participants of the undertaking, Mr. Yasin Mahmoud and Ms. Dahab Gebremeskel, expressed conviction that the integrated initiative has brought about a sustainable solution for irrigation shortcomings in the area.

A total of 720 farmers are engaged in farming activities along the diversion canal in Hashenkit and carrying out their work as members of an Association.
