Nacfa sub-zone: Growing awareness being witnessed as regards irrigation farming

The farmers in Nacfa subzone said that they would enhance contribution in national endeavors towards ensuring food security in line with the introduction of irrigation farming in the locality. Indicating that they used to exclusively depend on rain-fed farming, they pointed out that their livelihood has by and far been improved upon practicing irrigation farming thanks to the impact of sensitization and agricultural extension activities. Nacfa, 25 July 2012 – The farmers in Nacfa subzone said that they would enhance contribution in national endeavors towards ensuring food security in line with the introduction of irrigation farming in the locality. Indicating that they used to exclusively depend on rain-fed farming, they pointed out that their livelihood has by and far been improved upon practicing irrigation farming thanks to the impact of sensitization and agricultural extension activities.

Mr. Girmai Gebru and Mr. Mohammed Idris explained that the Ministry of Agriculture played vital role in nurturing such awareness, and that presently they are in a position to sell their fruit and vegetable harvests in Keren and Afabet markets. Similarly, Mr. Ibrahim Mahmoud stated that he has been exerting endeavors to enhance production of fruits and vegetables, and that the task demands patience and relentless effort.

Mr. Tesfalem Zewde, an agronomist in the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Nacfa sub-zone, indicated that the farmers could boost production on the basis of an association, and called on them to step up further integrated endeavors for better output.

The farmers on their part voiced readiness to supplement their endeavors with soil and water conservation undertakings and other tasks that would reinforce agricultural productivity.
