The Ministry of Agriculture said that current rain showers have provided added momentum to endeavors for ensuring food security. Asmara, 1 September 2012 – The Ministry of Agriculture said that current rain showers have provided added momentum to endeavors for ensuring food security.

Mr. Bekuretsion Habte from the head office pointed out that, although some crops could not be cultivated due to delayed spring rains, farms are at their best in line with the ample rain showers being registered, while most of the dams and micro-dams have conserved enough amount of water nationwide.

The Ministry indicated that rain-fed farming activities are in progress in a total of 508,000 hectares, and called on farmers to apply pesticides. It further indicated that the necessary preparations have been made in case of any locust swarm.

Mr. Bekuretsion explained that the Ministry has been strengthening agro-extension efforts, and that select crops which have already been cultivated are expected to enhance production.
