Laelai-Gash sub-zone registering significant accomplishment regarding forestry and wildlife

The Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Laelai-Gash sub-zone stated that it has registered significant accomplishment as regards preservation of indigenous trees and wildlife. Experts from the branch office further indicated that the plains of Bartieyai, Shensheliyai, Chefarai, Jerbet and Sheshebit have become a good site for diverse indigenous trees and wild animals such as elephant and antelope, which are increasing in population.

Augaro, 10 September 2012 – The Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Laelai-Gash sub-zone stated that it has registered significant accomplishment as regards preservation of indigenous trees and wildlife. Experts from the branch office further indicated that the plains of Bartieyai, Shensheliyai, Chefarai, Jerbet and Sheshebit have become a good site for diverse indigenous trees and wild animals such as elephant and antelope, which are increasing in population.

Mr. Negasi Habtemichael, head of the branch office, particularly explained that an increasing number of elephants is being witnessed there vis-à-vis added species and expanding mobility of flocks numbering up to 80.

Mr. Amine Berhane, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Goluj sub-zone, on his part pointed out that new flock of elephants numbering around 40 have reportedly started to inhabit Aiterif and Omhajer areas using Bademit Dam as source of water, besides the seasonal reports of elephant mobility to the sub-zones of Haikota and Gogne. He also called on the Ministry to extend the National Elephant Enclosure, which sets off the woods of Antore in Laelai-Gash, towards the sub-zones of Tesenei and Goluj in a manner that doesn’t affect farming activities.
