Assab, 15 September 2012 – Farmers engaged in integrated farming of dates in the Administrative areas of Abo and Kiloma, Southern Denkalia sub-zone, said that such new agricultural practice in the area has become promising.
Stating that they took the initiative to cultivate adaptable dates in the arid area in consultation with the Ministry, Mr. Wilae Abdalla and Mr. Omar Ali indicated that the number of date palms they own which were 50 in the beginning, have now increased to 400 in line with the relentless efforts they have been exerting to make their dream come true. The agricultural activity has also challenged the mentality that plant production is impossible in the area, they added.
Reports indicate that date farming was introduced in 2007 in 10 Administrative areas of the Southern Red Sea region, and that more than 1,500 trees of the plant have grown well.
