The Ministry of agriculture said that it is working on priority basis as regards quality improvement of agricultural products. Asmara, 26 September 2012 – The Ministry of agriculture said that it is working on priority basis as regards quality improvement of agricultural products.
Mr. Tekleab Misgina, director general of the Ministry’s regulatory service department, indicated that quality control-oriented inspections are made on the imported and domestic agricultural products, besides the issuance of export certificates in this regard. He further explained that the department conducts baseline studies for agricultural projects and businesses as regards land and water use and their impact on the environment.
Reports indicate that the Department renders quarantine service in the port cities of Massawa and Assab, in addition to Tesenei, and that a national laboratory in Asmara city is serving the necessary purpose to this end. The impact of insecticides, pesticides and animal drugs on community health and the environment is sufficiently assessed there, and punitive measures are taken in collaboration with the pertinent government bodies against illegal import of such agricultural supplies, they further elaborated.
Mr. Tekleab explained that future undertaking of the Department would focus on human resource development and the expanding of facilities, as well as infrastructure, in addition to revising proclamations and adopting new ones.
