The inhabitants of Mekaekae village, Shekaito Administrative area, said that impressive gardening and poultry farming activities are being witnessed in the locality, and that they are in a position to improve their livelihood on the basis of the innovative agricultural practice. Assab, 28 September 2012 – The inhabitants of Mekaekae village, Shekaito Administrative area, said that impressive gardening and poultry farming activities are being witnessed in the locality, and that they are in a position to improve their livelihood on the basis of the innovative agricultural practice.

Among the inhabitants, Mr. Kasim Ibrahim, Ms. Koina Hassen, Ms. Fatima Ahmedin and Niema Ahmedin explained that their lifestyle used to depend only on marine resources, but presently they harvested tomato and watermelon, besides the domestic supply of egg they have ensured in the area. They further pointed out that their products are being sold in markets in the port city of Assab.

Stating that the commercial practice of the inhabitants is by and large bound to lead to fishing, Mr. Mohammed Omar, Administrator of the village, called on the pertinent bodies to back up such initiative of carrying out small-scale farming in the area which has been stereotyped as ‘arid.’
