Ms. Leul Gebreab delivers presentation at Edinburgh International Peace Conference

Ms. Leul Gebreab, the Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW), delivered an insightful presentation at the International Symposium for Peace Building held in the Scottish city of Edinburgh.

Asmara, 23 October 2012 – Ms. Leul Gebreab, the Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW), delivered an insightful presentation at the International Symposium for Peace Building held in the Scottish city of Edinburgh.

In her presentation on October 21 that focused on Eritrea’s experience, facts on the ground pertaining to peace building and peace keeping, Ms. Leul pointed out that the Eritrean people’s culture of peace practiced since the 16th Century A.D. is anchored on their resilience and commitment to build a developed and peaceful society. She further indicated that such indigenous way of resolving conflicts on the basis of giving due credence to the main actors in conflict is the sole way of achieving sustainable peace solution.

Stating that women were the pioneers in bringing together four clans in the environs of Asmara city through conflict resolution, Ms. Leul gave extensive briefings on how the establishment of the NUEW in 1979 during the armed- struggle provided a basis for ensuring women’s active participation in the political, economic and social spheres. She also answered questions from the conference participants, and voiced Eritrea’s readiness to enhance endeavors in the international peace building venture.
