Select seeds cultivated in Gala-Nefhi sub-zone described effective

A number of farmers from the sub-zones of Serejeqa, Berikh and Gala-Nefhi stated that select seeds cultivated in Gala-Nefhi sub-zone following the necessary research at the National Institute of Agricultural Research have become effective.

Asmara, 29 October 2012 – A number of farmers from the sub-zones of Serejeqa, Berikh and Gala-Nefhi stated that select seeds cultivated in Gala-Nefhi sub-zone following the necessary research at the National Institute of Agricultural Research have become effective. The select seeds include a wheat variety suitable for bread and pasta processing, as well as a brewing barley variety, besides a mustard variety that serves for oil production.

Mr. Abraham Daniel, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the Central region, explained that the Ministry has been exerting endeavors to boost cereal production in the region on the basis of select seeds, and called on farmers to strengthen their supplemental role in this regard.

The Administrator of the Central region, Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, further elucidated that the putting in place of necessary infrastructure facilities has become a vital element for promoting agricultural output, and expressed the Administration’s readiness to collaborate with charismatic farmers.

Mr. Habtom Zewongel, an exemplary farmer, said that the secret behind his success in plant production is proper preparation and handling of farmland, and called on farmers to strengthen their efforts in this regard.

Among the farmers, Mr. Tekeste Fisehaye and Mr. Tesfalifet Kibrom on their part pointed out that the exposure visit to Gala-Nefhi sub-zone was vital in that they could exchange valuable knowledge and experience with the farmers there. They also voiced readiness to play significant role as regards introduction of the select seeds in their respective sub-zones.
