Southern region: Ministry organizes training course regarding prevention of ophthalmic diseases

The Health Ministry’s branch in the Southern region has organized a training course to staff members from all sub-zones as regards prevention of ophthalmic diseases, and called on them to play due role in community sensitization activities to this end.

Mendefera, 27 November 2012 – The Health Ministry’s branch in the Southern region has organized a training course to staff members from all sub-zones as regards prevention of ophthalmic diseases, and called on them to play due role in community sensitization activities to this end.

 

Mr. Abraham Yemane, head of the branch office, explained that the majority of instances of such diseases in the region are caused by lack of hygiene, and called on health institutions to enhance community outreach activities in this regard.

Dr. Sherefeddin Abdulmajid, an ophthalmic surgeon at the Regional Referral Hospital in Mendefera, asserted that primary care is a key prerequisite in doing away with causes of blindness, and called on the inhabitants to avoid traditional eye treatment practice. He further called on susceptible citizens such as the Diabetic to demonstrate diligence against ophthalmic infection and consult medical personnel on regular basis.
He further stated that use of sunglasses and hat should be promoted, in addition to application of soap.

Mr. Gebresilasie Gebremariam, head of noncommunicable diseases in the branch office, pointed out that the training course was organized with a view to equipping staff members with the capability to give First-Aid and conduct community sensitization activities in this regard.

The beneficiaries of the training on their part stated that it is helpful in their career.
