Instance of communicable diseases reportedly on the decline in Southern region

The Health Ministry’s branch in the Southern region indicated that instance of communicable diseases is on the decline in the region in line with growing popular awareness as regards various health issues.

Mendefera, 31 January 2013 – The Health Ministry’s branch in the Southern region indicated that instance of communicable diseases is on the decline in the region in line with growing popular awareness as regards various health issues. It made the statement at an assessment meeting conducted this week, during which it was stated that remarkable accomplishment was also registered pertaining to antenatal and postnatal care, as well as prevention of non-communicable diseases.

Accordingly, instance of malaria infection was reduced by 50%, while outreach of child and mother immunization grew by 17% vis-à-vis the number of admissions to maternity centers. Moreover, 600 inhabitants became beneficiaries of surgical treatment and free medications were extended to more others in line with a campaign that was conducted with a view to combating ophthalmic diseases.

The participants of the meeting assessed achievements made in the prevention of HIV/AIDS, environmental health and promotion, besides pharmaceutical service. They further put forth views regarding various issues.
In closing remarks, the Health Minister, Ms. Amna Nurhussein, asserted that the Ministry would put up further endeavors in a prioritized manner towards promoting the capacity of health institutions.
