The Ministry of Health stated that the role of government bodies and community initiatives is a vital prerequisite as regards combating harmful customary practices, especially those directly affecting women. Barentu, 11 February 2013 – The Ministry of Health stated that the role of government bodies and community initiatives is a vital prerequisite as regards combating harmful customary practices, especially those directly affecting women. It made the remark at an event organized in Mogolo village, Gash-Barka region, to mark World No FGM Day at national level.
Dr. Andebirhan Tesfatsion, director general of the public health department in the Ministry, disclosed that remarkable accomplishment has been registered in raising popular awareness to this end on the basis of community sensitization and promotional campaigns. He further pointed out that instance of FGM is significantly on the decline nationwide, and that the reinforcement of integrated endeavors is crucial to attain total eradication of such harmful practices.
Likewise, Dr. Le’ul Banteyirga, head of the Ministry’s branch in Gash-Barka region, said that it would sustain its venture against FGM in a way that ensures participation of religious leaders, community elders, Area administrators, traditional birth attendants and line ministries. Ms. Alem Belai, head of the NUEW branch in the region, on her part indicate that it has been playing an integral part in this regard, and called on pertinent bodies to enhance joint endeavors so as to attain the cherished goal.
The participants of the event expressed readiness to step up participation as regards combating harmful customary practices.
