School-based health activities witnessing commendable outcome in Central region

The Ministry of Education indicated that school-based health activities are witnessing commendable outcome in the Central region. It made the statement in connection with a training organized for school health representatives, heads of sub-zonal branches, supervisors and heads of health institutions. Asmara, 9 March 2013 – The Ministry of Education indicated that school-based health activities are witnessing commendable outcome in the Central region. It made the statement in connection with a training organized for school health representatives, heads of sub-zonal branches, supervisors and heads of health institutions.

Mr. Efrem Sium, head of the Ministry’s branch in the Central region, explained that school-based activities were launched in 2004 in collaboration with the Ministry of Health with a view to creating the groundwork for a number of cherished goals such as ensuring the desired behavioral changes. He further explained that school health representatives have been striving to promote individual and environmental hygiene practices, besides the fact that they are assisting students to obtain various health services.

Mr. Estifanos Gebrehawariat from the branch office said that promoting health on the basis of school communities is a sound strategy for safeguarding societal wellbeing. Furthermore, he pointed out that the role of health clubs in schools is vital as regards raising student awareness concerning health issues, and that instances of various diseases is declining within school communities.

Among the participants, Ms. Lemlem Habte and Mr. Muktar Saleh noted the importance of school-based health activities, and called for stepped-up efforts to this end.
