Mendefera, 18 March 2013 – A conference was held targeting doing away with childhood marriage in the Southern region.

Administrators, line ministry heads, religious leaders, Assembly members, other bodies and youths took part in the conference that was organized by the NUEW branch in the region with a view to reinforcing promotional and legal actions to this end.

Ms. Salha Adem, head of the Union’s branch office, outlined the overall negative impact of the harmful customary practice, and said that endeavors aimed at combating it should be recognized not only as attempts seeking women’s rights but also societal wellbeing.

Moreover, seminars were conducted in this regard by health professionals and the Prosecutor of the Southern region, during which the participants put forth views regarding several issues in this connection.

In concluding remarks, Ms. Fana Tesfamariam, Managing Director of the region, expressed the Administration’s readiness to play major role in promoting child and mother health, as well as doing away with such harmful customary practice.
