Efforts being exerted to develop horticulture farming in Mai-Aini sub-zone

Efforts are being exerted in cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and private farmers to develop horticulture farming in Mai-Aini sub-zone, Southern region, indicated Mr. Zebib Kahsai, head of Ministry of Agriculture in the sub-zone.

Mai-Aini, 24 March 2013- Efforts are being exerted in cooperation of the Ministry of Agriculture and private farmers to develop horticulture farming in Mai-Aini sub-zone, Southern region, indicated Mr. Zebib Kahsai, head of Ministry of Agriculture in the sub-zone.

He further explained that the sub-zone which is renowned for its vegetables and fruits production possesses abundant water supply and conducive climate and has the attraction of many horticulture farmers.

Reports from the Ministry of Agriculture branch office indicate that there are over 1000 hectares of fruits farms in the sub-zone and diary and pig farms are being introduced and are in good condition.

Mr. Idris Omar, tractor operator in Kertse-Kemte horticulture farm, pointed out that he worked for 20 years at the horticulture farms in the sub-zone and that the area provides abundant production for those who work diligentely.

Mr. Girmai Keleta, Administrator of Mai-Aini sub-zone, on his part indicated that other than those 700 farmers who have formed and association there are more than 100 individual farmers who have started activity in the area and that the branch office is providing them with necessary assistance and encouragement.

He further explained that according to the directives every person engaged in the horticulture farming have been made to produce green animal feed and own two diary cows and that currently with the 235 diary cows they have ensured the supply of milk to the local market.
