The National Deaf Community indicated that it is striving to enhance organizational capacity targeting the Southern region branch. Mendefera, 06 April 2013 – The National Deaf Community indicated that it is striving to enhance organizational capacity targeting the Southern region branch.
Established in the year 2003, the Deaf Community in the region comprises 300 members and aims at upgrading the skills of members as regards sign language and translation, according to Mr. Musie Belai, head of the branch office.

He further pointed out that the Association operates under the umbrella of the Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare, thus committed towards ensuring reliable access of social service to the Deaf. It has also been organizing training courses following the deploying of weaving and sewing machines by the regional Administration, Mr. Musie added.

Ms. Almaz Habte, a resource person, said on her part that the branch office has been conducting promotional activities with a view to raising the awareness of female members of the Deaf community regarding communicable diseases and harmful cultural practices, in addition to the training.

The branch of the Association called on the citizenry to extend a helping hand towards the endeavors being exerted to raise the production capacity of the Deaf, and educational institutions to provide more conducive environment for hearing-impaired nationals.
