The Ministry of Agriculture organized a seminar as regards significance of fertilizer and soil quality in boosting production.

Asmara, 10 April 2013 – The Ministry of Agriculture organized a seminar as regards significance of fertilizer and soil quality in boosting production.

The seminar which was conducted at Hager Media Hall within the Ministry of Information dealt with ways and means of preparing compost at household and community level, besides extensive introduction of temperate fruits.

Heading the seminar, Mr. Fikadu Tesfamichael, soil and water management expert and consultant, pointed out that successful plant production venture can be ensured only through maintaining the necessary soil fertility, and thus the need to enhance endeavors targeting soil and water conservation. He further indicated that misprocessed animal dung can end up in negative effect on plants, and that adequate application of organic material such as grass and stalk is vital in the process.

The agricultural expert also said that application of compost is significant in maintaining sustainable environmental hygiene, in addition to its importance regarding raising harvest and lowering weed density. “Large scale compost production is underway with a view to meeting fertilizer demand in line with the ongoing campaign to introduce temperate fruits in the Central region,” he added.
