Debarwa, 26 April 2013 – A seminar as regards sustainability of dams in the Southern region has been conducted in Debarwa town exclusively addressing the challenge of sedimentary deposit.
Speaking at the seminar in which Ministers and other government officials were present, the Administrator of the Southern region, Mr. Efrem Gebrekristos, pointed out that government endeavors exerted targeting the improvement of the livelihood of nationals has ensured commendable outcome. He further underscored that ensuring adequate water supply is the top priority in national ventures to ensure food security, thus giving rise to the significance of organizing such seminar.
Mr. Berhe Tesfamariam, head of urban water development in the Ministry of National Development, explained that the seminar dealt with precautious mechanisms in this regard, namely the need to construct water catchments and terraces, as well as managing sloppy topographies, besides afforestation.
Likewise, Mr. Daniel Habtai, head of projects in Segen Construction Company, expressed satisfaction with the participation of the majority of pertinent bodies in the seminar vis-à-vis the views put forth.
Moreover, the seminar participants elected a committee representing the Ministry of Agriculture, the Administration of the Southern region, the Forestry and Wildlife Authority, as well as the Ministry of Land, Water and Environment. They also called on the committee members, which are due to draft the necessary plan, to finalize the necessary preparation shortly.
