Water resources in Goluj sub-zone giving impetus to biodiversity: Report

The Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Goluj sub-zone indicated that water resources and agricultural infrastructures there have given rise to conducive environment for biodiversity.

Goluj, 2 May 2013 – The Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Goluj sub-zone indicated that water resources and agricultural infrastructures there have given rise to conducive environment for biodiversity.

There exists more than 80,000 hectares of fertile land in the locality. Reports further indicated that wild animals are in better condition in line with the availability of dams, water diversion canals and water wells, as well as other infrastructural facilities.

Mr. Amine Berhane, head of the branch office, explained that the construction of Bademit Dam in Omhajer area has secured ample water supply for livestock within the grazing quarters, and that the number of elephant flocks and other wild animals there is on the rise. He further disclosed that such merit in connection with water resource is expected to become a springboard to higher agricultural output in general. Mr. Amine also called on farmers to extend a helping hand to the branch office’s priority of implementing new soil and water conservation techniques within farmland.

Moreover, the head of the branch office stated that the sub-zone possesses remarkable potential pertaining to plant and livestock production at national level, and called for integrated efforts on the part of the inhabitants and agriculture experts with a view to realizing the cherished goal in this regard. Sound soil and water conservation technique is a vital prerequisite to this end, besides the practice of harrowing and scientific methods in general.
