Central region: Irrigation farmers to step up efforts for higher output

Irrigation farmers in the Central region said that they would step up efforts with a view to backing national endeavors towards ensuring food security. They voiced the pledge at meeting they conducted with Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, Administrator of the Central region.

Asmara, 29 May 2013 – Irrigation farmers in the Central region said that they would step up efforts with a view to backing national endeavors towards ensuring food security. They voiced the pledge at meeting they conducted with Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, Administrator of the Central region.

In the meeting, the regional Administrator pointed out that timely tasks of plaughing, sowing, weeding and harvesting are significant prerequisites as regards ensuring higher harvest, in addition to the use of select seeds. He further called on the farmers to strive to attain 3 harvests within a year, and apply proper use of compost.

The participants of the meeting on their part lauded the government’s commitment towards introducing the necessary technology for integrated farming and ensuring availability of tractors as well as select seeds.

Among the farmers, Ms. Fereja Idris, Mr. Gebremariam Araya and Ms. Tiblets Gebreyesus asserted that they would enhance their role to this end.
