Association of Fruits and Vegetables Farmers in Southern region to exert further efforts towards attaining higher harvest
The Association of Fruits and Vegetables Farmers in the Southern region said that it would exert further efforts towards attaining higher harvest. It made the statement at an assessment meeting, during which it was stated that the Association members managed to jointly harvest more than 700,000 quintals of fruits and vegetables over the past year.
Asmara, 3 June 2013 – The Association of Fruits and Vegetables Farmers in the Southern region said that it would exert further efforts towards attaining higher harvest. It made the statement at an assessment meeting, during which it was stated that the Association members managed to jointly harvest more than 700,000 quintals of fruits and vegetables over the past year.
Mr. Mehari Gebretinsae, Chairman, disclosed out that the Association already owns a building complex accommodating a store, sales outlet and offices in Menfera city, and that it is looking forward to open another store in Asmara.
Mr. Bahta Tedros, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the region, pointed out that the Government has been exerting increased endeavors towards promoting modern mode of farming on the basis of putting in place the necessary facilities. He further indicated that integrated irrigation farming activities are widely being introduced in the areas around the dams in Dirko, Sememo, Ona-Fer’on, Azayihe and Ziban-Seb’o, besides the growing organizational capacity of Association of Fruits and Vegetables Farmers.
Moreover, the participants of the meeting put forth views pertaining to several issues.
In closing remarks, Mr. Tesfatsion Girmai, head of economic development in the region, stated that the members are due to strive for maintaining the attained virtue of the Association vis-à-vis heading towards higher agricultural output. Moreover, he expressed the regional Administration’s readiness to collaborate with them.
The Association of Fruits and Vegetables Farmers in the Southern region established in 2001 has presently 3,288 members owning a total of more than 10,000 hectares.
