Families of martyrs in the Southern region asserted that their livelihood is witnessing improvement in line with the consistent support being extended to them by fellow nationals and the government.

Mendefera, 24 June 2013 – Families of martyrs in the Southern region asserted that their livelihood is witnessing improvement in line with the consistent support being extended to them by fellow nationals and the government. They further lauded the initiative being taken by various citizens residing abroad as regards backing families of fallen heroes, and said that a gesture of this type is a reflection of the weighty national values.

Among the inhabitants, Mr. Siyum Tekie, Ms. Haregu Gebretinsae, Ms. Hiwet Kiflai and Mr. Gebrehiwet Gebresilasie expressed satisfaction with the payments being made to them in line with the government’s benefit scheme. They further indicated that the norm of patronizing families of martyrs is being bequeathed to the young generation, and voiced pride for the martyrdom of their family members.

Mr. Firay Mehari, head of social welfare in the Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare’s branch in the Southern region, disclosed that citizens abroad have donated a total of 4 million Nakfa honoring the trust of martyrs since last month, and that it has been handed to 505 families of fallen heroes. Moreover, he pointed out that the branch office has been paying some of the families on outreach basis, and lauded nationals residing abroad for their sustained initiative.
