Extensive soil and water conservation campaigns underway in Halhal and Mai-Awalid Administrative areas

The inhabitants of Halhal and Mai-Awalid Administrative areas, Anseba region, said that they are engaged in extensive soil and water conservation campaigns in collaboration with members of the People’s Army with a view to making an impact on environmental stability.

Keren, 25 June 2013 – The inhabitants of Halhal and Mai-Awalid Administrative areas, Anseba region, said that they are engaged in extensive soil and water conservation campaigns in collaboration with members of the People’s Army with a view to making an impact on environmental stability.

Accordingly, more than 700 Km-long terraces and a number of water catchment walls have been constructed, while olive, peach, mango and coffee seedlings that flourished were hoed through the community venture.

Among the participants, Ms. Medina Idris and Ms. Halima Omar explained that the community members have acquired remarkable experience to this end, and that prior accomplishment has made remarkable impact on the environment and the restoration of erosion-hit areas.

Mr. Berhane Kahsai, Administrator of Halhal semi-urban center, disclosed that previously built water catchment walls in the area have secured more water for irrigation farms, and that future popular undertaking would focus on restoration of eroded areas.

Moreover, Mr. Ogbasilassie Kidane, Administrator of Mai-Awalid area, indicated that the task would continue with renovation of the dirt road connecting Halhal and Melebso.

Mohammed-Nur Mohammed-Ali, a member of the People’s Army, stated that active community participation is being witnessed in the process, especially on the part of females.
