Gash-Barka region: Preparations for rain-fed farming concluded

The Administration of Gash-Barka region said that preparations for rain-fed farming have been concluded, and that 241,000 hectares are due to be put under cultivation in the course of the current rainy season.

Barentu, 2 July 2013 – The Administration of Gash-Barka region said that preparations for rain-fed farming have been concluded, and that 241,000 hectares are due to be put under cultivation in the course of the current rainy season. It made the statement in connection with a meeting conducted with sub-zonal Administrators focusing on the required preparations thereof, especially regarding soil and water conservation.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Mohammed Hamd, the regional Administrator, outlined the necessary directives to this end, and pointed out that priorities would be given to families of martyrs and needy nationals as part of the support to be extended in the process. He further indicated that the Administration would provide the necessary support to non-settler nationals who are engaged in new agricultural ventures in the areas of Bademit and Gerset dams.

The participants of the meeting stated that they would do their level best towards ensuring bountiful harvest.

Mr. Abubeker Osman, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the region, presented detailed report pertaining to the preparations made by the government and communities in connection with the rainy season.

Reports indicate that the current rainfall trend revels a promising wet season.
