Eritrea exerting stepped-up endeavors towards eradication of tropical diseases: Report

– The Ministry of Health indicated that Eritrea is exerting stepped-up endeavors towards eradication of tropical diseases, and that a 4-year strategic plan has been mapped out to this end. It made the statement at a workshop which got underway over the past 2 days, during which it was stated that the joint venture between the Ministry and the WHO is focused on trachoma, water-borne diseases, leprosy and other diseases.

Asmara, 24 August 2013 – The Ministry of Health indicated that Eritrea is exerting stepped-up endeavors towards eradication of tropical diseases, and that a 4-year strategic plan has been mapped out to this end. It made the statement at a workshop which got underway over the past 2 days, during which it was stated that the joint venture between the Ministry and the WHO is focused on trachoma, water-borne diseases, leprosy and other diseases.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Yohanes Gebrat, WHO Representative in Eritrea, noted the importance of prompt public feedback in case of new incidence of such diseases. Another member of the organization equally called for enhanced community role in this regard.

Moreover, Dr. Araya Berhane, head of control of communicable diseases in the Ministry, highlighted the endeavors being exerted by the government to this end.

The participants of the meeting conducted in-depth discussion regarding the diseases, and put forth views on several issues.
