Anseba region: Community-based environmental hygiene ventures making significant impact in promoting community wellbeing

The Health Ministry’s branch in Anseba region pointed out that community-based environmental hygiene ventures, which were introduced in 2009, are making significant impact in promoting community wellbeing and environmental health.

 

Keren, 28 August 2013 – The Health Ministry’s branch in Anseba region pointed out that community-based environmental hygiene ventures, which were introduced in 2009, are making significant impact in promoting community wellbeing and environmental health.

Mr. Berhane Gebrekidan, head of environmental health in the branch office, said that  gratifying achievement has been registered as regards prevention of diseases related to environmental pollution thanks to the popular undertakings and the promotional activities conducted to this end. He further and expressed appreciation for the active participation of communities in the process, and called for reinforcement of hygienic practice in connection with water management. Moreover Mr. Berhane disclosed that diseases arising due to lack of such practice have shown visible decline over the past years.

The branch office also called for stepped up integrated efforts in this regard on the part of communities, Area administrations and village elders.

Reports indicate that a total of 129 villages have become beneficiaries of soak-pit latrines, giving rise to accomplishment of 60% of the community-led undertaking, and that further promotional programs would be launched targeting the remaining villages.
