Farmers in Adi-Berbere area to promote irrigation farming through effective harnessing of water resources

Farmers in Adi-Berbere Administrative area, Elabered sub-zone, said that they would promote irrigation farming on the basis of effective harnessing of water resources, and thus improving their livelihood.

Elabered, 28 August 2013 – Farmers in Adi-Berbere Administrative area, Elabered sub-zone, said that they would promote irrigation farming on the basis of effective harnessing of water resources, and thus improving their livelihood. They further indicated that construction of micro-dams in the locality has made visible impact in improving the socio-economic wellbeing of the community.

Among the farmers, Mr. Hamd Ali Hijai and Mr. Humed Idris Humed disclosed that the dams have enriched the underground water potentials in their environs, and that subsequently the demand in connection with potable water for humans and livestock could be met. They also pointed out that the inhabitants are preparing to put more land area under cultivation.

Mr. Bariagabir Aradom, Administrator of Adi-Berbere area, called on the inhabitants to practice judicious utilization of water and construct terraces as well as water catchment walls in the environs of the dams so as to avoid alluvial deposits.

Reports indicate that a number of micro-dams have been constructed in the Administrative areas of Halib-Mentel, Hadish-Adi, Debre-Sina, Sheib-Seleba and others in the sub-zone.
