The inhabitants of Keren sub-zone indicated that ponds in the environs of Dearit River have impounded ample water reserve, thus giving impetus to irrigation farming.

Keren, 31 August 2013 – The inhabitants of Keren sub-zone indicated that ponds in the environs of Dearit River have impounded ample water reserve, thus giving impetus to irrigation farming.

One of the inhabitants, Mr. Fikadu Woldu, explained that the ponds were constructed recently through popular undertaking with a view to meeting potable water supply for livestock and humans, and that the outcome has also encouraged irrigation farmers to expand the scope of their farms. He further called on them to step up endeavors towards attaining increased harvest.

Mr. Bereket Amlesom from the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Anseba region disclosed that the construction of the ponds was facilitated in collaboration with members of the People’s Army.

Likewise, Mr. Amha Gebrewahid from Keren Municipal Administration stated that the ponds are making significant input to the city’s water supply. He also called on the residents to practice prudent utilization of water.
