Gash-Barka region: Two micro-dams put in place in Debri area

– The Administration of Logo-Anseba sub-zone yesterday inaugurated 2 micro-dams in Debri area which have been put in place through the collaboration between the government and the local inhabitants.

 

Asmara, 04 September 2013 – The Administration of Logo-Anseba sub-zone yesterday inaugurated 2 micro-dams in Debri area which have been put in place through the collaboration between the government and the local inhabitants.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Kidane Woldegiorgis, Administrator of the sub-zone, explained that availability of such additional water reserve would give impetus to irrigation farming.

Likewise, Mr. Hadish Dirar, chairman of the development committee in Debri village, asserted that the micro-dams would make significant impact in improving the community’s livelihood. He also lauded the active participation of the inhabitants in the construction, of such micro-dams and said that the committee is working on priority basis as regards promoting modern mode of farming with a view to raising agricultural output. Mr. Hadish also called for further support by the government in this regard.

Mr. Samson Tesfamichael, irrigation development expert in the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Gash-barka region, disclosed that one of the micro-dams was constructed at a total government expenditure of around 18 million Nakfa, while the second was fully funded by the community entailing a total expense of 6 million Nakfa. He further expressed conviction that the micro-dams would have vital input in enrichment of underground water in the area.

The lifestyle of the inhabitants of Debri area is mainly based on farming and herding.
