Farmers along Barka River called upon to adhere to efficient irrigation mechanisms

The Administration of Agordat sub-zone has called on farmers along Barka River to adhere to efficient irrigation mechanisms in connection with water utilization.

Agordat, 11 October 2013 – The Administration of Agordat sub-zone has called on farmers along Barka River to adhere to efficient irrigation mechanisms in connection with water utilization.

Mr. Eyasu Haile, head of economic development in the sub-zone, explained that the task is in line with the ongoing efforts to ensure sustainability of underground water resource along the river, which is related to the potable water supply for Agordat city. He also urged the residents of the city to practice judicious handling of water.

Among the farmers, Mr. Mohammed-Ali Adem, Mr. Tesfagabir Kahsai and Mr. Mustafa Mohammed Saleh noted the negative impact of wasteful utilization of water especially in irrigation farming, and said that a water-saving irrigation system should be pursued as a sound strategy towards the cherished goal.

A total of 172 land plots have been put under cultivation along Barka River on the basis of sprinkler irrigation system, according to reports by the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the sub-zone.
