Health professionals in Gash-Barka region have called for stepped-up popular undertakings as regards environmental hygiene targeting communicable diseases.
Haikota, 11 October 2013 – Health professionals in Gash-Barka region have called for stepped-up popular undertakings as regards environmental hygiene targeting communicable diseases. They further disclosed that the community’s adherence to soak-pit latrines has shown a growing trend vis-à-vis the raised awareness thereof.
Mr. Gebru Zere, head of the health center in Haikota, pointed out that instances of communicable diseases are on the decline as a result of the rising community awareness.
Likewise, Dr. Leul Banteyirga, head of the Health Ministry’s branch in the region, said that a number of villages have become beneficiaries of soak-pit latrines in line with the ongoing community-involving tasks to this end.
“The efforts targeting widespread introduction of latrines have made positive impact in relation to the community’s awareness in that regard,” said Mr. Abdu Yacob, head of environmental hygiene in the region.
The residents of Haikota asserted that such popular awareness could be nurtured thanks to the conducting of consistent community sensitization activities, and called on fellow inhabitants of the region to emulate such initiative.
