Asmara, 18 October 2013 – The Eritrean Embassy to Italy yesterday disclosed that the Government of Eritrea has again asked for the speeding up of corpse identification of nationals who lost their lives in Lampedusa as victims of human trafficking crime so that their bodies may rest in the Homeland for which it has made every preparation.
Pointing out that the delay witnessed in the process has caused deep worry on the part of family members of the victims, the Government has called for the immediate sending of identified corpses to their native land.
The Embassy further stated that it was notified by the Italian government yesterday of having accepted, after a week-long delay, the demand of the Government of Eritrea.
Despite this, however, the Italian government claimed that the process of identifying the corpses entails DNA test, and that in the meantime some of the bodies of victims have been buried temporarily for ‘medical reasons,’ the Eritrean Embassy added.
