Barentu, 11 November 2013 – The NUEW branch in Gash-Barka region disclosed that promotional campaigns conducted targeting harmful customary practices affecting women’s health and psychological wellbeing have witnessed remarkable outcome. It made the remark at an assessment meeting, during which it was stated that gratifying level of community behavioral change has been witnessed thereof in the region.
Speaking at the meeting, Ms. Alem Belai, head of the branch office, noted the need of exerting persistent efforts until comprehensive doing away of FGM is attained, and called for stepped-up community sensitization activities in this connection.
One of the members of the anti-FGM promotional committee in Tessenei sub-zone, Mr. Mohammed Omar, said that the activities launched with a view to putting an end to such harmful practice have given rise to significant community awareness. He further expressed conviction that a still more gratifying result would be registered in the future.
Among the inhabitants, Ms. Kedija Sheikh Ali, Mr. Ramadan Deman and Ms. Abrehet Kibrom stressed the need of imposing legal measures against individuals who deliberately practice FGM, besides reiterating readiness to sustain their collaboration until the realization of the cherished goal.
