Mendefera, 26 November 2013- A Seminar was conducted to civil servants in the southern region aimed at avoiding traditional practices that could have negative consequences on women’s health and psychological make-up.
The objective of the seminar organized by the NUEW and conducted by health and law professionals from the region aimed at raising the awareness of the public regarding the negative consequence of underage females marriage and avoid practising it.
In an opening speech, Mr. Franco Kubaba, General Director of Social services in the region, noted the significance of conducting regular awareness raising educational programs aimed at protecting females being victims of underage marriage, and called on the public to reinforce its role to this end.
Ms. Aberash Habtai, Head of the NUEW branch in the region, indicated on her part that nurturing a healthy mother means ensuring the continuity of generations, and that underage marriage has huge negative consequences on females. He also explained that combating the practice of underage females is not only for the benefit of the victims but also for the whole society.
The participants called for sustainable awareness raising education in schools so that the public may understand the legal and religious procedures that prohibit underage marriage of females, and that research should be conducted on the issue in the Southern region.
