Barentu 30 November 2013- At a seminar it conducted in Barentu, the NUEW reminded the need for reinforced governmental bodies and that of the society’s in extensive efforts being exerted as regards preventing and doing away with practices that could cause psychological and physical harm to women.
At a seminar in which participants from 14 sub-zones of Gash-Barka region took part, Ms. Dehab Suleiman, head of Agitation Bureau at the NUEW Central Office, said that encouraging outcome has been registered in raising people’s awareness as regards practices that could cause harm to the society at large and women in particular. Still such practices exist and hence that integrated measures need to be taken, Ms. Dehab added.
Similarly, Ms. Abrehet Yemane, Counselor on legal matters at the NUEW, pointed out that alongside the extensive endeavors that have been made, upgrading people’s awareness as regards criminal and civil laws is an additional task of the association. Mr. Abrehet also indicated that women in particular have been victims of different societal problems due to limited knowledge of law, and thus the Association is working hard to enhance their awareness in this regard.
Ms. Alem Belai, head of NUEW in the Gash-Barka region, on her part said that a number of women have been victims of harmful practices frequent in the region and such occurrences have not yet been totally discontinued. Hence, the NUEW has been working to bring behavioral change in collaboration with different government institutions, particularly with healthcare professionals, she elaborated.
