Community rehabilitation workers in Barentu and Megolo sub-zones called upon to enhance role in doing away with harmful customary practices

The Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare’s branch in Gash-Barka region has called on community rehabilitation workers in Barentu and Megolo sub-zones to enhance role as regards doing away with harmful customary practices.

Barentu, 06 December 2013 – The Ministry of Labor and Human Welfare’s branch in Gash-Barka region has called on community rehabilitation workers in Barentu and Megolo sub-zones to enhance role as regards doing away with harmful customary practices. It made the call at a meeting in Barentu city, during which the role of the participants pertaining to swaying public opinion and prevention of crimes was described to be of paramount importance.

Mr. Eyob Kidane, head of the branch office, noted the role of women in ensuring overall development and family awareness, and thus explained the timeliness of putting an end to child marriage and FGM.

Moreover, the meeting discussed the causes of such practices vis-à-vis the measures that need to be taken, including legal actions.

Mr. Habtemariam Abraha, head of social welfare in the branch office, outlined the negative impacts of the illicit practices from family to societal level, and called on the inhabitants in general and community rehabilitation workers in particular to enhance participation for the realization of the cherished goal.

The participants of the meeting asserted that they would assume further responsibility in their pursuit.
