Seminar regarding prevention and disposal of outdated pesticides conducted here in the capital

A joint seminar as regards prevention and disposal of outdated pesticides was conducted in Asmara this month through the collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and FAO.

Asmara, 13 December 2013 – A joint seminar as regards prevention and disposal of outdated pesticides was conducted in Asmara this month through the collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and FAO.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Tekleab Misgina, director general of regulatory services in the Ministry, explained the negative impact of expired pesticides on the environment and human health in the absence of reliable community awareness as regards their disposal procedures. He further indicated that  visible negative impact has been witnessed in the country although no research study has been compiled to this end. Mr. Tekleab Misgina also stated that the seminar is aimed at carrying out extensive awareness-raising programs, as well as establishing the necessary information system and interaction.

A number of research papers were presented by experts in the course of the seminar focusing on the contextual issues of information dissemination procedures, role of pertinent bodies and media organs in conveying the right messages, as well as risks of pesticide pollution and raising users’ awareness.
