Environmental safety should be given priority in order to ensure sustainable development: Minister Tesfai Gebreselasie

At a seminar he conducted on 21 December in Akordet, Mr. Tesfai Gebreselasie, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, stressed that the safety of above and under ground natural resources should be given priority in order to ensure sustainable development.

Asmara, 22 December 2013- At a seminar he conducted on 21 December in Akordet, Mr. Tesfai Gebreselasie, Minister of Land, Water and Environment, stressed that the safety of above and under ground natural resources should be given priority in order to ensure sustainable development.

The Minister gave extensive briefings on the Government’s policy and strategy with regards land tenure as well as water and environmental management, and that the safety of environment is the fundamental concern in a bid to ensure the sustainability of development for posterity.

He also noted that continuity of existence has direct linkage with the safety and stability of environment, and that all activities should be undertaken in a way that they won’t negatively affect natural resources.

Minister Tesfai who said that the society has the right on all activities being conducted above the ground, stressed that all these activities should take into consideration the safety of resources and ensure national interest, and that all beneficiaries should deeply understand it.

Moreover, he explained that after independence the Government allocated land for 114 thousands citizens for residential, business and agricultural purposes out of which 32 thousands are women, and 65% of the whole population has become beneficiary of potable water.

Furthermore, Minister Tesfai indicated that land and water are directly related with people’s daily life, and that even though the accomplishments so far registered are not to be seen lightly, more efforts should be exerted to accomplish the remaining tasks, and that land information system has been put in place to that end.

The participants on their part expressed appreciation for the briefings and response they were provided to the questions they raised.
