Gash-Barka region: Minister calls for stepped-up soil and water conservation activities in sloppy and farming areas

The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, has called for stepped-up soil and water conservation activities in sloppy and farming areas in a bid to raising agricultural output.

Barentu, 31 December 2013 – The Minister of Agriculture, Mr. Arefaine Berhe, has called for stepped-up soil and water conservation activities in sloppy and farming areas in a bid to raising agricultural output. He made the call last Sunday at a meeting conducted with a view to assess the region’s agricultural activities in the year 2013.

Mr. Arefaine also urged farmers to make more focus on legumes and oil crops, and disclosed that more efforts would be made targeting prevention of livestock and plant diseases, as well as giving impetus to ongoing apicultural and poultry production activities.

Mr. Abubeker Osman, Head of the Ministry’s regional branch, stated on his part that the major accomplishments in 2013 pertain to renovation of diversion and upgrading of canals, ponds and micro-dams, in addition to soil and water conservation, animal breeding, laboratory works on fertilizers, development of green feed, organization of irrigation farmers, trainings and the like. The region has witnessed increased harvest in Fruits, vegetables and green feed this year as opposed to that of the previous one, he added.

Reports were presented in the course of the meeting, in which the participants exchanged views targeting various issues.

In closing remarks, the Administrator of Gash-Barka region, Mr. Mohammed Hamd, indicated that the Administration has been working on priority basis focusing on agricultural activities, and expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Ministry.
