Government exerting endeavors towards promoting effective harnessing of natural resources, Says Minister

The Minister of Land, Water and Environment, Mr. Tesfai Gebresilasie, explained that the Government is exerting endeavors towards promoting effective harnessing of natural resources with a view to ensuring sustainability of development programs.

 

Mendefera, 04 January 2014 – The Minister of Land, Water and Environment, Mr. Tesfai Gebresilasie, explained that the Government is exerting endeavors towards promoting effective harnessing of natural resources with a view to ensuring sustainability of development programs. He made the remark at a seminar he conducted in Mendefera city with community representatives and heads of government bodies in the Southern region, during which he gave extensive briefings regarding land use and ownership.

In this connection, Mr. Tesfai condemned suspended hold of land plots distributed for business purpose, and stated that the Government is compelled to take proper measure regarding such instances.

Moreover, instances of afforestation and inefficient utilization of natural resources were addressed thoroughly in the course of the seminar, besides the fact that the government’s study initiatives taken in a bid to enhance proper land use in remote areas was  rated as being satisfactory. Accordingly, overall use of land should be fine-tuned in such a way that ensures agro-economic development and improvement of community livelihood.

Mr.Tesfai further pointed out that widespread construction of dams and micro-dams has been resorted to as a strategy of coping with the prevailing problem of declining underground water. The seminar put forth views focusing on several issues.

In closing remarks, Mr. Efrem Gebrekristos, Administrator of the Southern region, called on communities to sustain popular initiatives as regards soil and water conservation, as well as forestry management, in addition to practicing judicious utilization of social service facilities.
