Asmara, 06 January 2014 – Numma Award was conferred today to outstanding sportspersons, coaches and nationals who made major contribution in the domain. The selection process involved ballot by media audience and sports communities.
Mr. Girmai Berhe, Direstor General of Radio Department, said that the award adds popularity in the sphere of sports, besides instigating enthusiasm thereof. He further indicated that selection process among sportspersons of rivaling competitiveness entails a big challenge, and lauded all those who made due participation for the realization of the goal.
Among the initiators and facilitators of the Award, Amanuel Alazar, reporter, expressed appreciation for the audience of the Numma FM channel for their loyalty in connection with the ballot undertaken on air and in person. He further disclosed that 30% of the secret ballot was done on air, while 70% of the votes dealt with personal approach.
The candidates comprised a total of 11 sportspersons covering football, cycling and athletics, in addition to 4 coaches and nationals with a charisma in sports. The selection took place at the Ministry of Information’s Hager Media Hall in the presence of veteran sportspersons, heads of national sports federations, and a number of sports fans.
Accordingly, Natnael Berhane, cyclist, Samson Solomon, Coach, Wehazit Kidane, cyclist, and Mr. Yoahnes Tesfai have won the Award which is the first in its kind.
