Mendefera, 23 January 2014 – The Assembly of the Southern region conducted the 13th regular meeting last Tuesday in Mendefera city.
In opening remarks, Mr. Woldai Gebre, Chairman of the Assembly, pointed out the need to exert all-round endeavors with a view to fostering community participation in the implementation of development activities and raising quality of social services. He further indicated that more efforts need to be put up towards ensuring higher agricultural output and securing animal feed.
According to the reports presented in the meeting, gratifying accomplishments have been registered pertaining to soil and water conservation, preparation of farm lands, environmental hygiene and the upgrading of school infrastructures on the basis of joint ventures on the part of communities and members of the People’s Army.
The participants of the meeting conducted extensive discussion on the agenda items, and put forth views on several issues including ways and means of raising the competence of new teachers, in addition to the need for enhancing follow-up mechanisms on implementation of development projects.
Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Efrem Gebrekristos, Administrator of the region, called on members of the Assembly to assume further responsibility in a bid to raising the impact of popular soil and water conservation activities, besides entertaining community affairs.
The participants also adopted decisions in connection with widespread introduction of soak-pit latrines, reinforcement of promotional activities among youths and facilitation of the construction of residential houses.
