Inhabitants of Shihate area engage in extensive popular soil and water conservation undertaking

The inhabitants of Shihate Administrative area, Shambuko sub-zone, are engaged in an extensive popular undertaking involving soil and water conservation, as well as renovation of dirt road on the basis of a 3-time weekly schedule.

 

Shambuko, 05 February 2014 – The inhabitants of Shihate Administrative area, Shambuko sub-zone, are engaged in an extensive popular undertaking involving soil and water conservation, as well as renovation of dirt road on the basis of a 3-time weekly schedule.

Mr. Hanis Mebrahtu, Administrator of the area, explained that the communal venture is aimed at restoration of erosion-hit farming areas and promoting viability of transportation, and that activities are being handled through organized team work.

Among the participants, Ms. Chichi Shirora and Ms. Weini Habtesilasie indicated that the reason behind the active popular participation is the community’s awareness regarding the input of such activity in raising agricultural productivity. They also said that they would sustain the initiative.

Mr. Bereket Mehari, Head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the sub-zone, pointed out that the community-led activity is witnessing active collaboration on the part of the branch office and local Administration. He further lauded the commitment of the community, and urged the other Area administrations to emulate the initiative.

In the same vein, Mr. Tesfai Bayrai, Administrator of Shambuko sub-zone, stated that the Administration would work on laying the groundwork for instigation of similar initiatives in the remaining areas.
