Call made for stepped-up efforts towards doing away with harmful customary practices in Ginda

The Administration of Ginda Regional Referral Hospital has called on communities to step up efforts towards doing away with harmful customary practices, especially FGM.

Ginda, 21 February 2014 – The Administration of Ginda Regional Referral Hospital has called on communities to step up efforts towards doing away with harmful customary practices, especially FGM.

It made the call at a meeting, during which Mr. Kesete Kahsai, Head of Administration and Finance in the Referral Hospital, explained that significant efforts were made to this end, and that promotional activities have given rise to increased community awareness in this regard. In this connection, instances of FGM have been reduced remarkably, and increased popular participation remains a prerequisite for  still more gratifying outcome.

Ms. Jim’a Adem, a member of Promotion and Information in the Hospital, made note of the impact of FGM on the psychology and health of women, and said that more promotional and sensitization ventures should be undertaken so as to raise communal awareness and nurture the desired behavioral change in this connection.

Mr.Yosef Isak, Head of the maternity department in Ginda Regional Referral Hospital, explained the impacts of FGM vis-à-vis socio-economic and health issues of women, and called for active participation of communities towards doing away with such illicit activity.
