Call made on women to play due role in the efforts to avoid harmful practices

Ms. Alem Belai, Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) branch in Gash Bark region, called on women to play due role in the efforts to avoid harmful practices for they are the ones who are the main victims.

Barentu, 14 March 2014- Ms. Alem Belai, Chairperson of the National Union of Eritrean Women (NUEW) branch in Gash Bark region, called on women to play due role in the efforts to avoid harmful practices for they are the ones who are the main victims.

At a meeting she conducted with NUEW group leaders of the sub-zones of Aqordet, Mogolo, Gogni and Barentu, Ms. Alem indicated that different training programs gave been organized aimed at raising the awareness of women, and called on the public to reinforce efforts to avoid under age marriages and female genital mutilation (FGM).

Ms. Akberet Yemane, legal advisor of the NUEW, said that sustainable efforts would be conducted so that women understand the legal procedures of civil and criminal laws, and called on the participants to transfer their knowledge to fellow women and bring about the desired behavioral change.

The participants on their part commending for the briefings they received, expressed readiness to transfer their knowledge to fellow women.
