Asmara, 14 March 2014- At a seminar he conducted to Asmara taxi drivers, L/Colonel Taddese Berhane, Central region’s Police Traffic Commissioner, called for careful driving in order to reduce traffic accidents that are on the rise.
He further indicated that in 2013 around 70 thousand traffic violations have been registered out of which 4,000 have caused material damages worth 40 million Nakfa and 55 deaths.
Lieutenant Yosief Berhane, head of traffic accidents in the region, said that drivers should believe in the law rather than on the presence of Police Traffic, and those individuals who drive without driving license should be aware that they are endangering their lives and the lives of others.
Likewise, Mr. Mengis Gilamicael, chairman of the taxi owners association, said that the briefings they received would shoulder them responsibility to play due role in the efforts to reduce traffic accidents, and that their association would work hard so that taxi drivers respect traffic regulations and social ethics.
The participants on their part expressed readiness to abide by the traffic law and contribute their share in reducing traffic accidents.
