Preparations made for rain-fed farming in a number of areas in Southern region

Reports indicated that preparations have been made for rain-fed farming in the Southern region’s sub-zones of Senafe, Adi-Quala, Segeneiti, Tserona, Dekemhare and Mai-Mine on the basis of popular undertakings involving participation of the members of the People’s Army 

Mendefera, 31 March 2014 – Reports indicated that preparations have been made for rain-fed farming in the Southern region’s sub-zones of Senafe, Adi-Quala, Segeneiti, Tserona, Dekemhare and Mai-Mine on the basis of popular undertakings involving participation of the members of the People’s Army

The communal ventures entailed preparation of farmlands, construction of terraces and water catchments walls, renovation of dirt roads, as well as removal of alluvial deposits from water wells.

Mr. Habtish Teklebirhan, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in Senafe sub-zone, explained that the community-led project is aimed at raising agricultural output and security increased animal feed, and disclosed that it is witnessing active participation of agriculture experts.

Likewise, Mr. Berhane Woldesilassie, head of economic development in Adi-Quala sub-zone, stated that the undertaking there has gained momentum through daily mobilization of around 700 manpower.

A 1.5 Km-long water diversion canal in Hebo Administrative area, Segeneiti sub-zone, which is capable of feeding a 30 hectare-wide farm area has been renovated on the basis of a similar initiative, while around 11 km. of terraces have been constructed in Dekemhare sub-zone.
