A seminar dealing with the quality, potential and management of underground water in Asmara was conducted yesterday witnessing the participation of heads of pertinent business ventures, line ministries, PFDJ branch, members of regional Assembly and sub-zonal Administrators, among others.
Asmara, 15 April 2014 – A seminar dealing with the quality, potential and management of underground water in Asmara was conducted yesterday witnessing the participation of heads of pertinent business ventures, line ministries, PFDJ branch, members of regional Assembly and sub-zonal Administrators, among others.
Mr. Zerit Tewoldebirhan, Managing director of the Administration of the Central region, explained that the seminar is aimed at crystallizing clear understanding as regards the current condition of underground water in the region, in addition to promoting prudent use of water.
Also speaking at the meeting, Mr. Mebrahtu Eyassu, head of the Water Department, pointed out that water supply in the city is reliant on quantity of rainfall, and that sustainable supply could be ensured as long as the underground water within is conserved and managed with wit. Raised popular awareness in this connection is a prerequisite, he added.

Accordingly, there exist a total of 568 registered water wells in Asmara, 114 of which have been investigated. Subsequently, 74 were reported to have fulfilled standards, while 40 are saline.
Participant experts put forth views focusing on a number of issues.
In closing remarks, the Administrator of the Central region, Mr. Kahsai Gebrehiwet, said that such seminar would be organized in the future as their input is vital pertaining to doing away with irresponsible water use.
