Fruit and vegetable farmers in Tserona sub-zone striving to meet local demand

Farmers who are engaged in fruit and vegetable production along Tserona River in Tserona sub-zone said that they are striving to meet local demand.

Tserona, 26 April 2014- Farmers who are engaged in fruit and vegetable production along Tserona River in Tserona sub-zone said that they are striving to meet local demand.

Mr. Bereke Misgina, head of the Agriculture Ministry’s branch in the sub-zone, said that the area is endowed with rich underground water resources that favors irrigation farming throughout the year and growth in the number of such farmers.

Accordingly, a total of 92 hectares in the locality have been put under cultivation with fruits and vegetables, and a gratifying harvest could be ensured so far.

Mr. Mulueberhan Tesfalem, horticultural development expert in the sub-zone, on his part disclosed that the ministry has been collaborating with the farmers through extending consultation service and organized training with a view to raising harvest, and that they have witnessed improvement of livelihood.

Mr. Legese Woldegebriel, one of the farmers who has been engaged in irrigation farming for around 20 years, stated that he is in a position to attain wide scope of production, and explained that the major quandary among the community of farmers pertain to erosion of the riverbanks.
